"Night People"

Ron Javorsky

April 2, 2005 - April 30, 2005

Santa Monica, Calif. -- March 25, 2005 -- Starting on April 2nd, Santa Monica's Schomburg Gallery, celebrates April 2005 as "National Jazz Appreciation Month" with an exhibition of jazz photography by Long Beach photographer Ron Javorsky saluting the music of a treasury of renowned jazz musicians many of whom live in the Los Angeles area. Kenny Burrell, Tierney Sutton, Diane Schuur, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Poncho Sanchez and Monica Mancini are among them.

Entitled "Night People", the exhibition presents works of artist, Ron Javorsky. His life as a jazz bass player has given him unique opportunities to photograph his fellow players. He has used these occasions to produce images of jazz musicians that are not mere visual records of a performance, but which instead portray virtuosos in the original sense of that word: soulful players.

Ron Javorsky was born into a family of musicians. His father was a jazz trombone player, his mother a church organist and piano accompanist. His older brother also plays jazz trombone. Ronís first instrument was voice. He sang as a little boy accompanied by his mother at various home and public events. At seven he took up cornet and switched to baritone horn at thirteen. Going on fifteen, he fell in love with the string bass and he has played it since.

Ron Javorsky states that "light is my way of showing the strange within the familiar by way of unusual illumination and/or bizarre distortion. I am especially drawn to yellows and oranges ‚ colors that project warmth, that create contrast, that show us how everyday images can be shown with luminescence and singular beauty."

KJAZZ, Listener-Supported Radio, 88.1FM, the preeminent station for jazz in Southern California, will be broadcasting a live interview with Ron Javorsky on Friday, April 1st.

The U.S. Congress has passed a resolution designating jazz as "a rare and valuable national treasure." The Smithsonian Institution supported in part by a special congressional appropriation, has designated April as "Jazz Appreciation Month" and describes jazz "as the most significant musical culture to emerge in the United States".
